Week Two Assignments

Presentation #2: My Niche- Prezi Style

60 points

Due: 1/12

Objective: To get practice creating and delivering a Prezi presentation and explain to the class your plans for the final project.

Directions: The final project will entail the creation of a series of blog posts for the niche (topic) you have selected.  Thursday’s presentation will serve as an outline, a blueprint of sorts, for this project.  Your presentation goal is six to seven Prezi moves/slides in five-minutes.  Your presentation should use plenty of photos and images.  NO TEMPLATES ALLOWED.  This is also an exercise in personal branding.  Don’t be boring.  ENERGY is essential to your delivery.  Be creative with your presentation.  Images are essential.  Dress the part.  Wear your personal brand to class on presentation day.

In your Prezi presentation, address the following about your blog:

  • Blog Title
  • Niche – (specific topic)
  • Why did you choose this topic?
  • Who would your audience be?  Who would be interested in this?
  • What makes you qualified to write about this subject?
  • Show examples of other bloggers in this niche.
  • List a few ideas for post topics.
  • List three of your positive “brand attributes” that you can illustrate/communicate to your audience by writing these posts on your blog?
  • Save the last minute for audience feedback and questions.  See if your classmates have any ideas for you.
Finally, on presentation day, your Prezi will need to be embedded on your blog in a new post.  No need to email me the link.  See Addison‘s as an example.  If you can’t get the embed to work with your template, you can add a hyperlink to your Prezi like Romain (see third section of his post).
Blog Assignment #2: The Passionate Trial Balloon

30 points

Due: 1/10

Objective: To practice writing about a topic that could become your niche for the final project.  To put yourself out there and create media. To test the waters and see if blogging about this subject is something you are comfortable doing.

Directions: In a 500-word blog post complete with multimedia elements, write a post that fits into your chosen niche.  It should be something you’re passionate and knowledgeable about.  In addition, be thinking about who your audience might be in this online niche space.

*Note: all blog posts should include creative elements like hyperlinks, photos, and videos.  Hyperlinks to Wikipedia do not count.  Utilize sub-headers and allow for spaces between paragraphs.   No one wants to read a giant block of text. In addition, all blogs must be submitted to TurnItIn.com.

Week One Assignments

Presentation #1 – A Brand You Should Know

50 points

Due: Friday, 1/6

Objective: To gain practical presentation skills and introduce the class to bloggers with personal brand pizzazz.

Directions: Using the blogger/author you’ve selected, design a creative, informative and memorable presentation to deliver to your classmates.  You will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create and Slideshare.net to share and post on your blog.  Your presentation goal is six to seven slides in five-minutes.  No more.  No Less.  Your goal is to entertain us and explain to the class WHY we should care about this person.

  • Why should personal branding students be inspired by this person?
  • What message(s) does their online presence convey?
  • Analyze their blog postings, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook profiles.  Google him/her.
  • What do others say about this person?
  • What can we (should we) learn from this person?  What can we imitate?

You will finish by posting the Slideshare.net link to your blog and sharing any relevant links about this person.  Your PowerPoint presentation should use plenty of photos and images.  NO TEMPLATES ALLOWED.  This is also an exercise in personal branding.  Don’t be boring.  ENERGY is essential to your delivery.  No more than 15 words allowed per slide.  Dress the part.  Wear your personal brand to class on presentation day.

  • What else could you add to the conversation this week?

*Note: all blog posts should include creative elements like hyperlinks, photos, and videos.  Hyperlinks to Wikipedia do not count.  Utilize sub-headers and allow for spaces between paragraphs.   No one wants to read a giant block of text. In addition, all blogs must be submitted to TurnItIn.com.

Blog Assignment #1 – My Starting Point

30 points

Due Tuesday, 1/4

Objective: To get comfortable with blogging, to establish a beginning Web presence, and to incorporate creative visuals.

Directions: Write a 500-word minimum blog post about you and your goals.  Use these five themes/questions to guide your writing:

  • When you Google your name, what returns in the search results?  Discuss the findings and your feelings about them.  What would you like to change?
  • What does your dream career look like?  Who are people you look up to for inspiration?
  • How does it feel to share your thoughts and feelings on the Internet in a space other than Facebook?
  • Rate your confidence level when it comes to sharing what you know with others.  What are your areas of expertise?  Do people often ask you for advice about certain things?  Elaborate.
  • Your choice!  Ok, I helped you with the first four – now you pick the fifth topic to write about whatever you want!
